Emily Petersen is a senior photo editor at Science Magazine in Washington, DC and has been with the magazine since 2015. She works with freelance photographers to visualize complex topics for cover and feature stories. Emily also manages photography for online news and the Science Visuals Instagram account.
Recently, her work focused on a noteworthy feature on the health impacts of living in the world’s highest elevated town (La Rinconada, Peru). Emily was the multimedia editor for a feature on Greenland’s dying ice. She has curated the magazine’s best pictures for the past three years: 2019, 2018 and 2017. As a member of the award-winning Science Visuals team she regularly contributes to their blog.
Emily received her master’s degree from American University, where she studied photography, film and environmental science. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology at Virginia Tech and spent five years as a microbiology scientist.
She is a proud WPOW member and portfolio reviewer, was a participant of The Kalish Workshop in 2017 and the NPPA Multimedia Immersive Workshop in 2019 where she made this video.
